THE ART OF TILES

This work draws from an ancient representation of Venus discovered in Pompeii, preserving the sensual and serene pose of the original figure. However, the goddess leaves the archaeological world behind and reappears through a contemporary, colourful and deliberately kitsch visual language.
The composition transforms the Roman fresco through a brighter palette, graphic outlines and fragments of newspaper integrated into the shell, creating a dialogue between classical imagery, popular culture and the present. The pink geometric border recalls ancient Greco-Roman motifs, while the grid of ceramic tiles fragments the scene as though it were an archaeological discovery reconstructed piece by piece.
Venus no longer belongs solely to the past: she is reborn as a modern icon. Between history, memory and artistic reinterpretation, the work revives an image thousands of years old and gives it a new identity within the visual universe of Kitsch & Huis.

This piece from the Dolce & Tamarra collection portrays a dancer in deep blue tones, framed by a vibrant red circle evoking the Japanese rising sun. The composition, created on tiles, incorporates the kintsugi technique, where golden cracks highlight the beauty of the imperfect and the repaired. Balancing delicacy and strength, tradition and modernity, the work reflects the essence of the collection: a dialogue between the refined and the kitsch, the poetic and the theatrical.

If Van Gogh had been famous during his lifetime, his trajectory could have been very different, from his economic and emotional stability to his influence on art. While he might have enjoyed greater recognition during his life, he would also have faced the challenges that fame brings, which could have influenced both his work and his personal life.
The mystery and tragedy of his lack of recognition in life, combined with his posthumous success, have made Van Gogh one of the most iconic and fascinating artists in the history of art.
